2Choose where to count

Outline the part of the photo to count, for example one stack or one shelf. Objects outside the outline are not counted.

Click on the photo to place corners around the area.
Click the first corner, or press Enter, to close the outline.
Backspace removes the last corner. Drag a white handle to adjust.
Scroll or use + and − to zoom; drag to move the photo.

3Outline one object

Click inside one object you want counted. Its edge is found for you; drag the white corners to fix it. Everything that looks like it is counted.

Edge

Light and shade100%

Brightness counts fully: any change in light can be an edge. Needed for white objects on a white background.

Choose a typical object that is fully visible.
If the found edge is wrong, drag its corners, press Backspace to remove it, or use Draw corners. On shiny or shaded coloured objects, lower Light and shade (about 10%).
If the objects come in different colors or shapes, outline up to 3 examples, one of each kind. For one kind in different sizes (logs, pipes), one medium example with a wider Size range usually works better.

4Check and adjust

Green marks are counted. Click a wrong mark to remove it, or click a missed object to add it. If many marks are wrong, change the settings below instead.

The defaults suit most photos. Each of these helps only in particular cases.

Detail

High compares 1.5× more detail and takes about 3–4× longer. Try it for small objects with fine detail (screws, engraved parts). On busy photos it can find fewer.

Edge around the example

Include also compares a thin ring around each outline, such as the dark gap between logs. It helps when a pattern inside a big object is counted as a small one (on the logs photo it removed about a fifth of those marks). Lower Shape match a little when you turn it on.

Rotation step

Only with Any direction. 15° also tries the angles in between, for long, thin objects; it takes twice as long.

Minimum contrast35%

A match needs at least this share of the example's light-and-dark contrast. Lower it for faint or blurry photos; raise it if plain background is counted.

Merge distance1.1×

Marks closer than this many object sizes become one. Lower it if touching objects get one mark; raise it if one object gets two.
